MELAKA: A widow with two children was charged at the Sessions Court here today on charges of burning her boyfriend's child's face on an ironing board and rubbing chili in the victim's eyes, on mouth and cheeks, last year.
The accused, Chan Wan Ting, 32, however, pleaded not guilty as soon as the two charges were read out by the court interpreter before Judge Nariman Badruddin.
According to the first charge, the accused allegedly abused a six-year-old girl resulting in her suffering physical injuries in her right hand.
The victim's right cheek was also affected by being pressed on a hot ironing board.
The action was done at about 10.15 am at her boyfriend's house in Taman Merdeka, Batu Berendam on 2 August 2021.
The accused was also alleged to have abused the same victim by causing injuries to the mouth, both cheeks and right eye using chili.
The act was carried out between 7 am and 8 am on the side of the road in Taman Merdeka in mid-May 2021.
Convicted, the accused can be sentenced to a maximum of 10 years imprisonment or a fine of RM20,000 or both in accordance with Section 3 (1) (a) of the Children Act 2001.
Earlier, the prosecution conducted by Deputy Public Prosecutor Intan Lyiana Zainal Abidin proposed that bail of RM50,000 be imposed for both charges.
The accused, represented by lawyers Cassian Anthony and Kent Tan Chow Teng, appealed for low bail on the grounds of having to look after her two children, apart from being unemployed after losing her job as a clerk last year.
After hearing the appeals of both parties, Nariman then allowed the accused bail of RM15,000 for both charges.
He also set the date of February 15 for the re-mention and submission of the medical and forensic report of the case.
