You might have seen this photo that has gone viral, which claims that a woman burned her hands while turning on the stove due to the alcohol content in the sanitizer.
Some source said that it is true that the sanitizer is flammable while some source states that it is a hoax.
According to US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains ethyl alcohol are readily evaporates at room temperature into an ignitable vapour.
This means that if the hand sanitizer is not dry completely, it is flammable.
Here are some safety precautions you can practice when using hand sanitizer.
- Rub your hands until the sanitizer has evaporated and hands are completely dry.
- Use only a small amount of sanitizer as too much liquid may not evaporate quickly.
- Store the alcohol-based sanitizer away from high temperatures/flames / extreme heat/ electrical outlets.
- If the sanitizer is spilled, any potential sources of ignition should be removed immediately, following by cleaning up with water.
- Supervise children while using hand sanitizer and ensure they rub their hands until completely dry.
You are advised to wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, as an alternative to hand sanitizer.
