TW: Mentions of sexual harassment

Six participants of the Miss Universe Indonesia pageant have lodged formal complaints with the police, alleging that the event's organizers subjected them to sexual harassment by conducting invasive "body checks," including topless examinations. These distressing allegations have shaken the beauty pageant world and raised concerns about the treatment of contestants during such events.

The contestants, hailing from Indonesia, accused the organizers of requesting five of them to strip down to their underwear for physical examinations within a room containing more than 20 individuals, including men. Shockingly, the five contestants were then asked to pose topless for photographs. The contestants' lawyer, Mellisa Anggraeni, expressed her disbelief at the invasive checks and confirmed that six contestants had filed formal complaints.

The Indonesian beauty pageant took place in Jakarta from July 29th to August 3rd and aimed to select the country's representative for the upcoming annual Miss Universe competition. However, the shocking allegations have overshadowed the event and prompted discussions about the respect and dignity that participants deserve.

The Miss Universe Organization, the governing body overseeing the pageant, released a statement in response to the allegations. They acknowledged being made aware of the accusations and affirmed their commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly. The statement emphasized the importance of providing a safe environment for women and condemned any form of abuse or impropriety.

The gravity of the situation was further highlighted by one of the complainants during a press conference. She disclosed that she was asked to pose inappropriately, including being asked to open her legs. The contestant expressed feelings of discomfort, confusion, and violation as a result of these disturbing requests.

Controversially, the incident shines a light on broader concerns about the treatment of beauty pageant contestants and the extent to which their dignity and autonomy are upheld during such events. These contestants, who are often young women aspiring to make a positive impact on society, should not be subjected to such degrading experiences.

The Jakarta police confirmed that they had received the contestants' report and that an investigation would be conducted.

Indonesia, as the world's most populous Muslim country, has witnessed objections from religious groups regarding beauty pageants in the past. These recent allegations of sexual harassment not only underscore the importance of respecting and safeguarding contestants' rights but also spotlight the need for cultural sensitivity in organizing such events.
