A tense situation unfolded in a flat on Jalan Gangsa in Georgetown, Penang where members of the fire and rescue team spent three hours persuading a man who had become aggressive, threatening violence against his mother and endangering others by attempting to ignite a gas cylinder. The incident reportedly occurred yesterday.
The emergency call came in at 10:57 PM, alerting authorities to the disturbing situation within the residential complex. Upon arriving at the scene, responders encountered a man in his 40s who had locked himself inside, fortified the door with wire, and assaulted his mother, who is in her 60s.
Efforts to calm him were futile, with the man, suspected to be under the influence of drugs, posing a severe threat. Disturbingly, he opened two gas cylinder valves and brandished a lighter, indicating a potential fire hazard. Additionally, he activated a gas stove, heightening concerns of a potential blaze.

In response, the fire and rescue team initiated a high-pressure water flow to mitigate any potential fire risks.
After a three-hour negotiation, the man eventually released his mother. Subsequently, the police intervened, detaining the aggressor. The elderly woman was handed over to Ministry of Health personnel for necessary medical attention.
Preliminary details reveal that the unemployed man resides with his mother and another family member. Throughout the ordeal, the man persistently assaulted his mother whenever rescue personnel attempted to approach, using a pestle as a weapon.
