The popularity of the E-Scooter has been rising in recent years, with many using it as a cheap and quick alternative to get around the city sidewalks. An alternative to manually walking about, it's also looked at as something of a fun activity. However, with a recent video, netizens have been questioning the function as well as legality of these transportations on our roads.
Taking to TikTok, user @nikhaelneil recently showcased two foreigners taking to the roads of Kuala Lumpur on an E-Scooter. To make matters worse, both of them were riding one single scooter, sharing the already small and narrow stand of the "vehicle"
With a clear disregard to not only their safety, but the other road users as well, the 14-second clip showcases the two of them riding around the busy road along with other vehicles. To make matters worse, the "passenger" behind the rider is also seen taking videos of the surrounding, showing a clear ignorance to her wellbeing.
Unsurprisingly, netizens were extremely displeased with their actions and took to the comment sections to voice their opinions over the couples risky actions.
Starting on the 1st of January 2021, the usage of E-Scooters on the road was deemed to be a public offense. Riders found guilty of this crime will be fined RM300 for the first offence, a maximum of RM1,000 for subsequent offenses or jail for three months according to the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
While its usage on the public roads are considered illegal, the scooters are still permissible to be used in permitted areas such pedestrian areas and walkways, playgrounds and grounds around shopping centers around the country.
