A tragic accident occurred in Sabah early yesterday morning (Sept 30) when a mother and her daughter were fatally hit by a car while crossing the road. The incident took place near Kampung Rugading along Jalan Kota Kinabalu-Tuaran around 5:40 a.m., according to local reports.
The two women, a mother accompanying her daughter to school, were struck by a Myvi heading toward Tuaran from Kota Kinabalu. Both victims died at the scene, according to the Tuaran district police chief, Superintendent Noraidin Ag Maidin.
Initial investigations indicate that despite the common safety advice to always look both ways before crossing, the women were unable to avoid the oncoming vehicle. The driver of the Myvi, who was traveling on the main road, has since voluntarily reported to the Traffic Police Station at the Tuaran District Police Headquarters (IPD) to assist with the investigation.
Superintendent Noraidin confirmed that police are treating the case as reckless driving under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987. The driver has been detained and is under remand while authorities continue to collect witness statements and evidence from the scene.
The police are urging anyone with additional information to come forward and assist in the ongoing investigation. Those who may have witnessed the incident or have relevant details are encouraged to contact Inspector Haffiz at 011-61600964 or reach out to the nearest police station.
The sudden loss of both mother and daughter has sent shockwaves through the local community, and the investigation continues to shed light on the exact circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
