The common tales of locals falling prey to scams while working as grape or tomato pickers overseas are well-documented. However, a Malaysian woman named Kay has shattered these stereotypes by earning a substantial sum through legitimate tomato-picking work in New Zealand.

@sis_kayy Sharing my journey as a Malaysian who work at Tomato Glasshouse farm . I put minimum pay 22.70nzd as reference but some of the worker get paid above that #workingholidaynewzealand #workingholiday #workingholidayvisa #fyp #malaysianinnewzealand #whvnewzealand vlog, chill out, calm daily life(1370843) - SUNNY HOOD STUDIO

Her motive for sharing this experience on social media was to enlighten Malaysians about the opportunity to work in New Zealand under a work-holiday visa, an option largely unknown to many. In her video, Kay revealed earning a handsome minimum wage of $22.07 NZD (RM63.14) per hour, accumulating a monthly income of $4,086 NZD (RM11,364) by working five days a week for nine hours each day.

Despite the mandatory 18-19% tax deduction for New Zealanders, her income, even after conversion to Malaysian Ringgit, surpasses the local minimum wage. Maintaining a five-day workweek enables her to explore the city during her leisure time. Alongside picking tomatoes, Kays's duties include tasks such as trimming leaves, cleaning, and other assigned chores. An added advantage is the freedom to move around during working hours, avoiding monotony.

The opportunity not only assists in fulfilling financial commitments in Malaysia but also facilitates substantial savings. Prospective applicants for the work-holiday visa should note that some employers might not provide accommodation unless situated in rural areas.

Moreover, during the application process, one can opt for a preferred industry, making it an ideal chance to explore a new professional field for those seeking a change from their current line of work.
