Road users in Malaysia are aware by now of the legal repercussions of using a mobile phone while behind the wheel, which could incur fines of up to RM1000 or a six-month imprisonment for repeated violations.
However, recent incidents shed light on another potential violation: adjusting radio channels while driving can also lead to hefty fines and legal complications!
A recent social media complaint highlighted the experiences of a local woman who received a fine for answering a call while driving. This individual not only received a financial penalty but was also compelled to attend a court hearing, consuming nearly seven hours of her time and causing significant distress.
Recounting the incident, she stated, "At that time, I was driving, and the phone kept ringing. Initially, I ignored it, but the caller persisted. Thinking it might be an emergency, I picked up the phone to check."
Surprisingly, traffic police had established a roadblock at an intersection, resulting in her receiving her first-ever fine for this offense.
Sharing her ordeal as a cautionary tale, she emphasized the need for drivers to avoid handling their phones or adjusting radio channels while driving to prevent falling into similar legal traps and incurring fines.
Law enforcement officials have previously clarified that actions such as placing a phone on the lap for navigation purposes or adjusting a phone mounted on a stand while driving are also deemed illegal.
