An underaged teen from Singapore who initially wanted to earn extra money for her family had unfortunately ended up getting sucked into a job fraud that required her to pay more than RM36K (S$11,000)!
According to the girl's father Wu, 42, who spoke to Shin Min Daily News, the scammers contacted his daughter on April 28th and offered her incentives of between S$50 and S$100 (RM167-RM340) for completing online tasks.
According to Shin Min, one of the "agents" sent Wu's daughter a "job link" and introduced herself as "Alice." The girl allegedly received instructions to open an account using the link and was informed that she could earn rewards by making deposits and completing tasks.
She would, however, face a penalty that would be shown in her account balance if she failed to finish the assignments or make the required deposit within the allotted time frame. She was informed that the fine would also increase each time.
The teen was persuaded by an agent that she would earn S$10 as an incentive if she deposited S$100 into the account. The teen subsequently paid the deposit, but the demanded sums rose to an amount she could not afford.
According to Shin Min, the first request quickly grew to about S$11,000 in total. The desperate teen had to resort to secretly transferring the required amount from her mother's bank account. Despite already paying over RM3.7k in penalty, the amount kept increasing and she grew even more desperate.
According to the girl's mother, a man reached out to her on Telegram and offered to assist in repaying the RM10,052 (S$3,000) in "penalties" incurred. In return, he had asked for her nudes in exchange for the money.
Trembling and terrified, that's when she decided to come clean to her parents.
Upon learning of the incident, the parents quickly lodged a police report and was relieved that their daughter did not give in to the man's demands. Although this was the first time their daughter had used their mobile phones without permission, they were glad that they'd come to the rescue before it was too late.
