Foodpanda has made a significant leadership change by removing its CEO, Jakob Angele, amid allegations of leaking confidential information related to the potential sale of the platform to Grab. Angele, who had been with the company for nearly a decade, has been succeeded by John Fang, formerly Foodpanda's Chief International Officer.
The controversy surrounding Angele's departure revolved around the revelation of Instagram stories and WhatsApp messages that surfaced over the past weekend, as reported by Campaign Asia. Rebekah Rankine, who was in a romantic relationship with Angele, claimed that he shared information about the potential sale of Foodpanda to Grab during a conversation they had over drinks on August 22nd, 2023. She initially posted this information on her Instagram stories, including screenshots of their WhatsApp messages.
Although the authenticity of their relationship and the WhatsApp messages was confirmed, Rankine deleted her Instagram story post about the sale at Angele's request after a falling out on September 18. By that time, the news had already spread, and on September 21st, Foodpanda's parent company, DeliveryHero, officially confirmed the potential sale to Grab.
Following Rankine's Instagram story on September 18th, subsequent WhatsApp messages allegedly revealed that Angele claimed he was terminated for leaking the information. However, on October 9th, he reportedly deleted these messages and altered his initial statement.
Consequently, On October 16th, Foodpanda made an official announcement regarding John Fang's appointment as the new CEO of Foodpanda, eliminating Jakob Angele, who completed a nine-year tenure with Foodpanda.
