Former Malaysian Prime Minister Dato' Sri Najib, who was convicted of misappropriating 42 million Malaysian Ringgit from SRC International, has marked the completion of one year behind bars. The former leader, now serving his sentence, has garnered attention due to a recent Facebook post shared online.
In the post, an image of Najib engrossed in ablutions and prayer accompanies a reflective poem. The verse reads, "365 days have passed, still trapped behind iron bars, sleeping on the cold cement floor. The daily prayers, five times a day, have become a habit. Praying for mercy to ease the trial, praying for peace, to avoid suffering."
The poem paints a somber picture of his incarceration, where he describes the routine of daily prayers as a solace during his time of confinement. The verses convey his plea for compassion to alleviate the challenges he faces and his desire for a peaceful existence.
The post further delves into his routines within the prison walls, including moments of waiting for the morning light to filter through the iron bars and the solace of reciting the Quran with earnestness as twilight gives way to night.
The sentiment of solitude is also included in the verse, where Najib acknowledges the presence of a higher power even in isolation, assuring that divine guidance is unwavering.
The Facebook post was shared at around 6 AM on the same morning, and within a mere span of three hours, it managed to garner an overwhelming response from the online community. More than 40,000 'sad' reactions and over 3,410 comments poured in.
Najib's prison term commenced on August 23, 2022, immediately after his final appeal related to the SRC International case was denied. The conviction resulted in a 12-year sentence.
