Honor Killing In Iran | Teen Girl Beheaded By Father For ‘Eloping’
An Iranian girl, 14, was violently murdered by her own father in what believed to be an ‘honor killing’ for running away with a man she loved.
Romina Ashrafi met and fell in love with Bahamn Khavari in May but her family opposed their relationship. So, she eloped with him. However, the pair were found and Romina was brought home by the authorities, who had expected that this would put the girl in danger.
Last Thursday (May 21), while Romina was fast asleep, her father beheaded her with a sickle, claiming that this was a form of ‘punishment’. With the standard of gender equality in Iran where women are treated lesser than men, the father would probably escape death penalty.
The brutal killing, however, had sparked outcry on local social media and this has prompted Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to call on his cabinet to speed up the adoption of relevant bills regarding ‘honor killing’.
