In just two hours, a 70-year-old man in Singapore lost almost S$71,000 (equivalent to RM311,406) after allegedly clicking on a fake Google Play app on his phone.
The individual, identified only as Loo, informed Shin Min Daily News that he received a phone call from a DBS Bank employee at 9AM on January 29th. The employees alerted Loo that repeated transfers of money had been initiated from his account to foreign countries between 3AM and 5AM.
By the time he realised what was happening, he had already lost the majority of his money, leaving him with barely S$2,000 (RM8,773) in his bank account.
According to the police, Loo's phone had unfortunately been infiltrated by malware. This can occur when a user downloads malware-infected programmes from unauthorized third party websites. The malware then gains "permission" to take over a mobile device and commit fraudulent online transactions.
The public are advised to be more cautious when downloading any apps on their phone to protect themselves from dealing with such cases.
