Whenever our national athletes compete in international sports tournaments, undoubtedly, Malaysians feel a sense of pride and rejoice in their achievements, whether it's the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, or any other prestigious event.
Typically, these tournaments are hosted in various countries worldwide, such as the upcoming Olympics in Paris, France, later this year. However, recent rumours suggest Malaysia has been offered the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games. While this news might initially excite Malaysians, many netizens have strongly opposed the idea, considering it a bad decision.
According to several news reports, the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) extended the invitation to Malaysia after Australia withdrew from hosting due to high costs. The Australian government was willing to pay AUD380 million (RM1,177,057,818) for breaching the contract. Despite Malaysia having previously hosted the games in 1998, many netizens need clarification about the country's ability to afford such an extravagant event, especially considering the lack of potential profitability.
Many took to Twitter to voice their concerns, pointing out Australia's withdrawal due to financial constraints and questioning Malaysia's financial readiness. Some argue that the games' significance has diminished following Queen Elizabeth II's passing.
Malay Mail reported that discussions with the government are ongoing. Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh stated that Malaysia's decision to host the Commonwealth Games potentially will be announced soon.
Do you believe Malaysia should accept the offer and bear the associated risks, or should the offer be rejected altogether?
