You may have come across a beauty trend on TikTok whereby people would DIY ice rollers using old lipstick cases to treat puffy eyes. While the method is still currently trending, it's actually been around for ages. Even Marilyn Monroe was reported to have had a face bath in a basin filled with ice cubes, as part of her morning routine.
Known as skin icing, this method is a type of cold therapy whereby the skin is treated with literally any type of ice: cubes, water, globes, rollers or cryotherapy tool.
According to facialist and aesthetician to the stars, Candace Marino and Joanna Czech, they both noted that skin icing truly does wonders on improving overall complexion. Think putting ice pack on a bruised knee, the same concept applies for skin icing where it's used for aesthetic purposes. Although it's not facelift, as Marino said, skin icing does elevate the quality of the skin.
Whether it's puffiness, redness or inflammation, the method helps reduce those issues by improving blood circulation. As the skin is tightened, you'll feel instantly rejuvenated. Czech also noted smaller pores and more defined features.
If you prefer the old-school home method aka ice cubes, just make sure not to directly apply on your bare face as to avoid skin reaction. This is especially a major NO for people with sensitive skin. Instead, wrap the ice with a muslin cloth before lightly massaging it onto your face.
Can't tolerate icy cold cubes? For Czech, she recommended storing serums and sheet masks in the fridge. They're equally great in cooling your skin, but not to the extent of frosting your skin as compared to the cubes.
There are also plenty of products specifically designed for skin icing. Ice rollers, globes and cryosticks are said to be medically effective in reviving weary skin. For a smooth glide, the experts highly advised cleansing and applying the skin with a serum beforehand.
While skin icing is highly favorable, Czech advised that it's more suitable as an occasional one-off, instead of daily regime. She further explained that the latter can seriously dehydrate the skin, causing more damage than good.
