NEW IN: Authorities Consider Making Jalan Bukit Bintang A No-Vehicle Zone

31-Dec-2024

Authorities are now exploring the possibility of closing Jalan Bukit Bintang to vehicles in an effort to address severe congestion in the area.

The proposal comes amid ongoing monitoring of traffic patterns by the police, who have noted persistent gridlocks during peak hours along the bustling city route.

The stretch between the intersection near the shopping malls and Jalan Pudu is particularly prone to traffic jams, be it day or night.

Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa confirmed that discussions and studies on restricting or redirecting traffic are underway.

"We are considering redirecting and completely closing vehicle access to this area, turning it into a pedestrian zone. I believe if we implement this with clear communication to the public and relevant parties, this proposal can be considered. We can test it out first", he said.

As part of the initiative, authorities also plan to enhance surveillance using AI-powered CCTVs to monitor the area and enforce traffic laws remotely.

Rusdi noted several factors contributing to the congestion, including vehicles stopping or parking illegally, pedestrians crossing at undesignated areas, and the presence of street performers drawing large crowds.

Taxi and e-hailing services frequently stopping to pick up or drop off passengers have also added to the problem.

According to Kuala Lumpur Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department, over 1,500 traffic summonses have been issued, and 36 vehicles towered since December 13.

The most common violations cited include obstructing traffic (129 summonses), disobeying traffic signals (34), and driving without a license (22).
