However, a recent incident in Sandakan has raised concerns as a video went viral, capturing the moment burning firecrackers were hurled at a group of lion dancers during a performance in front of a shoplot.
Sandakan OCPD ACP Abdul Fuad Abdul Malek reported that the incident took place on Monday night (Feb 12th). The shop owner later apologized to the lion dancers, and both parties reached an amicable settlement without police intervention.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported from the incident, as reported by The Star.
In the viral video, a woman can be seen throwing a burning firecracker at the lion dancers. As the firecrackers erupted at their feet, two dancers reportedly fled, leaving one performer to handle the lion head. The lone dancer continued the performance amidst the hazardous explosion.
